About Herbs

Dried Herbs

Dried herbs have long been valued for their healing and soothing properties, and are easy and delightful to use in the form of teas.
We source over 100 individual carefully dried herbs from the very best wild or organic providers, and pack them in 100g bags to ensure peak quality. If you would like more than 100g, please enter the amount of bags in the Quantity box.
You can use single herbs for delicious, healthful infusions, or our experienced herbalists can create combinations to support mind, body and spirit.
For the perfect cup of tea, add a heaped teaspoonful of your chosen herb or herb combination into a pot or cup, add boiling water, and infuse for ten minutes.

Herbalism

Herbalism is a well established medicinal practice based on the use of plants and plant extracts.
No plant could survive in the wild without the ability to synthesize chemical compounds as a defence against predators including fungi, animals, insects and bacteria.
It was long ago discovered that some of these compounds have beneficial effects in the battle to treat human diseases and disorders, and progress continues to be made.
Over 12,000 plants are currently recognised as having benefits to human health, and it is judged that this could be as little as 10 per cent of the total.
Many herbs and spices long used by humans to flavour food have been found to have health benefits. Such plants include kitchen favourites cinnamon, chilli peppers, turmeric, garlic, oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary.
As with pharmaceutical drugs, chemical compounds found in plants can bind to receptor molecules in the human body in a process that is well understood. Both conventional and herbal medication can be highly effective, and both have potential to cause harmful side effects. Therefore it is essential that both pharmaceutical and herbal medicines are used with care.

Tinctures

Convenient and effective, tinctures are created by extracting and preserving the effective components of plants in a mixture of water and alcohol.
It is essential that the herb used is of the highest quality and those endorsed by Gaia are organic or wild-crafted and supplied in tinctures of 1:3 to 1:5 parts herb-to-liquid in 25%-60% alcohol unless otherwise stated.
Our tinctures are supplied in 100ml bottles. If you require a greater quantity, please enter how many 100g bottles you would like into the Quantity box.
Please note that the sale of certain Herbs and Tinctures has been affected by the new EU Directive on Herbal Medicine (THMPD) from April 30th, 2011.
Some tinctures cannot be sold online any more, and can only be acquired following consultation with a qualified herbalist. Our herbalists are readily available, and we have over 100 tinctures in stock. Dosage information will be contained in your order. Please contact us for details.

Note for Herbalists: We can supply herbal tinctures, dried herbs and creams with a trade discount to qualified herbalists.
